Introducing...
Using Morphology in Literacy Instruction
Use the tools and knowledge of Structured Word Inquiry to build literacy skills playfully and effectively...

-
Practical strategies for deeper understanding: Help students connect spelling to meaning and move beyond just "sounding it out"
-
Student-centered learning approaches: Use student interests and needs to create motivating yet effective word study sessions that build curiosity, confidence and skills

What Makes This Course Different? Well, I've been there!
I was scared to start regularly incorporating morphology into my sessions. I was experiencing strong reading outcomes with my students, but there were parts that never felt quite right, including:
- dodging specific words because they didn't fit the syllable types or I couldn't explain them
- not being able to answer questions about less typical spellings
- teaching CVCs for months to the same kid
- seeing limited progress with spelling skills for anything "irregular"
With encouragement and support from colleagues, I started to shift my practice bit by bit. I took baby step risks integrating a bigger focus on morphology - like making matrices with students and using word sums each session. Eventually, it not only felt natural, but necessary! The results spoke for themselves. Now, I truly can't imagine going back.
I want to save you time & money, and give you space to ponder! I've sat through expensive courses that offered little practical help and limited opportunity for questions. Other courses required questions on the spot, but I needed time to process. So, I give you the golden nuggets of what I've learned throughout my years of studying with leaders of the Structured Word Inquiry community - ideas and information you can use right away - with the extra bonus of plenty of time to ponder. Watch the modules at whatever pace you need. Try things out in sessions. Ask questions as they arise.
Of course, don't just take my word for it...

"Using Morphology in Literacy Instruction is the practical class I've been waiting for to support me with incorporating SWI in my lessons with students. The format of working through four case studies with elementary through high school aged students was very engaging, and the time needed to complete each module was easily manageable, even with a busy schedule. Within each case study Kathleen offers strategies and targeted activities for teaching and review and I came away with fresh ideas I could use immediately with my own students."
